What SUVA says...
From SUVA statistics, one in three occupational accidents with disabling or even fatal consequences is caused by a fall from a height of up to five meters.
The use of portable ladders alone causes about 6,000 occupational accidents each year. If workers in industry and handicrafts, as well as plant engineering experts , painters and plasterers, put the vital SUVA rules into practice, this figure could be considerably reduced.
As suggested by SUVA, to avoid falls from height:
- Use a portable ladder, only if there is no alternative;
- if possible, prefer an elevating work platform, a mobile scaffold on wheels, or a ladder with a platform;
- Consistently put safety regulations into practice.
By the way, "alternative ladders" such as tables or chairs are dangerous and should be avoided both at work and at home.
